Expired & Dropped Domains

What are expiring and dropped domains?

Domain names are registered for a set number of years. They are normally registered for just 1 or 2 years but it is possible to register them for up to 10. If a domain registration period is coming up to an end it is referred to as an 'Expiring Domain'. If the domain name is not renewed, the domain name is said to have dropped.

What are the benefits of getting an expiring or dropped domain?

There are thousands of great domain names which drop every day. Some of them are good, some of them are not. Many of these domain names were previously sites and so have incoming traffic to the domain name. Traffic is a great way to make revenue from a domain name. The domain itself may be of a great value as well. For example, some 3 letter .com domain names sell for over $1000.00.

How do I find out which domains are expiring?

There are sites which display the domain names which will be released soon or have been released. These sites normally charge for the privilege of viewing these lists. While there are sites which do not charge for this (most notably DeletedDomains), most of these sites tend not to be as up to date.

I've found a domain I want - How do I get it?

To catch a domain you want which you saw in an expired domains list, you need a site to 'Catch' the domain for you. Catcher sites try and register the domain for you as soon as it is released from the registrar. While in theory it is possible to catch a domain without using a catching site, the chances of it happening are extremely slim since their scripts check for it releasing 24/7.
